with Fabio Machiavelli

Micro Breath of a Blue Lung draws on the vocal, percussive and resonant dimensions of large marine mammals. It is a 45-minute work consisting of a constellation of miniatures and explores the timbral world of cetacean sounds, whose echoes reappear in Machiavelli’s sound-making devices. During the performance, these devices are played by the performers. But each instrument leads a sonic life of their own – before and after the concert, they can be encountered as autonomous sound objects in an installation.

Processes of shaping and reshaping lie at the heart of Machiavelli’s practice. For several years, his work has centred on instrument building, DIY methods, and the development of new instruments as alternative sound surfaces, uncharted realms of sonic exploration. The objects, technologies and concepts he creates are not merely tools for producing sound: they invite performers and listeners alike to actively engage with the music as participants in a transformative musical practice.
