Concert for wind quintet and piano.
The beautiful and rare Samarkand by Claude Vivier is not to be missed: naïve, persistent and fervent melodies, long, incantatory threads of sound thrown out on pillars of chords vibrating like bells (Ligeti described Vivier’s style as 'Super-Messiaen').

In the same programme, a sextet by Misato Mochizuki, the darling of Brussels, and the five poisonous flowers of the Garden by Jean-Luc Fafchamps (who plays the piano) – about which Jacques Amblard in Le Monde de la Musique wrote the following: "The composer speaks of "esotericism and black humour" in his music. You certainly feel the second of those here (…) in the solemn, grating tones, the quacking ascents by the cor anglais and the trumpeting of the horn. The last movement accentuates further, but without heaviness, the process of the instruments "turning animal", as Deleuze would have described it. Fafchamps manages to maintain the impression of a mysterious order in even the most exuberant cacophonies. You still feel the underlying presence of a "ringmaster", a hint of Stravinskyism. This is a truly original, very controlled, poetic and funny style, and whatever the case, an excellent surprise."
