Proverbs [The Unanswered Question]

Proverbs [The Unanswered Question]
2020

THE UNANSWERED QUESTION is a first step in a collaboration between Brussels Philharmonic and the Ictus.
On the programme are four minimalistic masterpieces of the 20th century, chosen for their introspective quality. ‘Tehillim’ (1981), Steve Reich’s absolute masterpiece, is at the core of the evening. On the other side of the spectrum, Gavin Bryars redefines the word ‘minimalism’ with ‘The Sinking of the Titanic’ (1972).

This concert is conceived as a poetic and quasi-narrative moment: carefully lit, amplified and with a quadrophonic mix. Starting with the ‘instrumental theatre’ of Charles Ives’ ‘The Unanswered Question’ (1908) and with Steve Reich’s ‘Proverb’ from 1995 in the middle – a gem of an evening with sure-fire expression.
