It was reported that the French artist Marcel Duchamp, after hearing _For Philip Guston_ in New York, exclaimed: a harmonist at long last! Impossible to analyse, but Morton Feldman’s nonetheless sublime harmonies are honed by ear, note by note, and the performers’ playing is called upon to be ultra-concentrated, verging on silence. It produces a peculiar dull light that is both fascinating and disorienting. Hovering rhythms and phrases leading nowhere. Never-ending repetition, always in a different place, with the memory in mild disarray. Feldman’s objection to the imperious Will of Western music took the form of what he called "a silent protest".

Inspired by the time-stretching experiments of the “downtown” New York composers (Terry Riley and La Monte Young), Feldman wrote “For Philip Guston” in 1984, an abnormally long work for flute, resonant percussion and piano lasting over four hours!
